Khumbo Kalua
Research Director; Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Blantyre Institute for Community Outreach; College of Medicine, University of Malawi

Dr Khumbo Kalua acts as the Research Director of Malawi’s Blantyre Institute for Community Outreach (BICO), that works in collaboration with Ministries of Health and Education in Malawi, as well as international partners, to implement projects such as conducting research in eye care in Malawi. At BICO, Dr. Kalua has co-authored 150 publications to date which may be found here. Dr Kalue is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi, Southern Africa.
Dr Kalua graduated as a medical doctor and later specialized in Ophthalmology, at the University of Malawi. His research interest in Public Eye Health and Tropical Eye Diseases led him to study a Masters in Community Eye Health and a PhD in Infectious diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Kalua’s contribution to research include mapping of trachoma in Malawi, modifying the key informant method (KIM) for use in children in Malawi, rapid assessments of avoidable blindness (RAAB) and several primary eye-care interventions.
