Upcoming at the 2018 annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene: CWW analyses of the state of preventive chemotherapy for soil-transmitted helminthiasis.
Please join CWW for their presentation of two posters at the 2018 American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. Presentations will be on view on Monday, October 29.
The accepted poster presentations are summarized below:
Global Trends in Preventative Chemotherapy for Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis, with a focus on Pre-school age children
Using the publicly available World Health Organization Preventative Chemotherapy database, we analyzed global preventative chemotherapy (PC) coverage for soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) with a focus on pre-school age children (PSAC: ages 1-4 years). PSAC experience substantial morbidity from STH and often receive PC from a different platform than school-age children who are a key focus of global STH control efforts. We found that 49% of PSAC received treatment in 2016, compared with 65% of school-age children. Additionally, in 2016, over 100 million PSAC resided in countries requiring but not administering preventative chemotherapy to PSAC. Find the full abstract here.
Country progress on preventative chemotherapy implementation and coverage among all children at risk of STH
As the World Health Organization recommends countries with ≥20% prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis at baseline provide preventive chemotherapy (PC) to preschool-age (PSAC: ages 1-4) and school-age children (SAC: ages 5-14), we analyzed publicly available World Health Organization-data to assess country progress in PC coverage for all children. While 2016 marked the highest proportion of countries treating both risk groups in a given year (49%), the number of countries treating both risk groups has largely remained the same from 2006 (47) to 2016 (50). This analysis highlights critical areas requiring improvement to achieve established goals in PC coverage. Find the full abstract here.
